How To Choose your Singing Scale

How are you all!!! I hope you are fine and I hope you are pursuing music with all your passion and hardwork. So as it is clear from the title that today's topic is how to choose your singing scale. So as I promised you all that I will upload a blog about choosing the singing scale and I am posting it now. In the last blog I discussed about the different octaves and root note, these terms will be used here so if you did not gone through it,here is the link for you (Different octaves and root note). So now when you have proper information about different octaves and root note. We can continue this blog. So now let us quickly understand what is standard scale of a person and how does it affect.

1) Standard Scale - Standard scale is a scale  which a particular singer uses to do his/her vocal riyaaz or exercise. It is the scale that is suitable for that particular singer and it does not fatigue the vocals at all. If you are not practicing on your standard scale you will have number of problems such as -

a) Vocal Fatigue - If you are not using your standard scale for doing vocal practice then you are bound to damage your vocals. Your vocals will get tired and it will lead to hoarseness and it will gradually be damaged. Specially doing the riyaaz(vocal practice) on higher notes than your root note leads to significant damage.

b) Difficulty in speaking - Again if you not using your standard scale then you will find it difficult to speak after doing vocal practice and you will have this issue even when you are doing the riyaaz for a very long period of time.

c) Pain in Vocals - Vocal practice on wrong scale will also lead to the pain in the vocals. You will find it difficult to speak and even if you are not speaking, you will find pain in vocals.

Now let us have a look, How to choose your standard scale -

Males - Here we are talking about the adult males (not kids). The general scale for the adult male is C sharp. This is the scale that is generally comfortable to adult male and is their standard scale. Some of the adult males also have D Sharp as their standard scale, but major adult male go for C sharp. C Sharp is present in the middle octave of the harmonium or keyboard, it can also be called as First Black (Pehla Kaala).

Females and kids - The Standard Scale for females is going to be G Sharp. Kids also have the same scale. Some females also use B flat as their standard scale but generally G sharp is used. G Sharp is present in the lower octaves of the harmonium and keyboard.

Important Information - Guys listen to me carefully. When you will start your vocal practice with the standard scale that is comfortable to you, you will still notice that your vocals will get tired or you may have pain in vocals, but that will be for shorter period of time and this pain will not last long. As you go in the gym, you do exercises and you get cramps, similarly your vocals will surely get tired as you are starting it's training just now but these pain will go away with the passage of time. So please do your vocal exercise and follow your dreams. Thank You!!!
